RXN UUCP FAQ - Q uestion and A nswer Table of Contents:
| Q | 1. What is UUCP? |
| A | "First designed in 1976 as part of a research project at AT&T Bell Laboratories, UUCP -- which stands for Unix-to-Unix CoPy -- gave UNIX systems the ability to transfer files and execute programs remotely via a telephone line or serial connection. Although 20 years have passed since the first version of UUCP appeared, it is still very much in use, doing the same basic things." --from Ed Ravin et al, " Using & Managing UUCP ", O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. , 1996. |

|
| Q | 2. Why would I use UUCP today? |
| A | UUCP allows systems that do not have a permanent connection to the Internet (such as dialup computer bulletin boards and small company offices) to send and receive internet email and usenet news, for multiple users, in a store and forward manner, over existing dialup phone lines. The host site and the UUCP site communicate on a predetermined schedule, leaving the UUCP site phone line free for other use (voice, FAX, or BBS) between transfers. |

| Q | 3. Where does UUCP fit in with other forms of mail transport? |
| A |
The following is a crude comparison of mail transport mechanisms
typically used over conventional analog telephone lines:
SLIP and PPP TCP / IP links offer the flexibility of accessing Internet services in addition to POP3 and SMTP , but UUCP is unique in offering multi-user mail transport on a non-dedicated analog telephone line. This makes UUCP a useful option for sites without a dedicated telephone line (small offices) or sites with additional needs for their telephone line (electronic bulletin board systems). Additional information can be found in John Wobus' Email Protocol FAQ in both hypertext or plain text .Service User Network Network Transport Application Type Type Interface Protocol Protocol Service ========= ====== ========== ========= ========== ============ On-demand Single SLIP IP TCP POP3 On-demand Single PPP IP TCP POP3 On-demand Multi UUCICO UUCICO UUX/RMAIL UUCP Dedicated Multi SLIP IP TCP SMTP Dedicated Multi PPP IP TCP SMTP |

| Q | 5. How can I run UUCP under DOS? |
| A |
UUCP implementations vary from operating system to operating system.
Non-UNIX operating systems typically require additional software to
provide full UUCP connectivity.
Those interested in gating internet email and usenet news to FTN netmail and FTN echomail , respectively, may wish to consider Jason Fesler's GIGO gateway software. Fredgate is another option, although not for the faint of heart...

| Q | 9. What UUCP services does RXN offer? |
| A |
RXN Communications
offers a unique RXN UUCP Service.
RXN UUCP Service provides you with a conventional UUCP connection for internet email and usenet newsgroups. This service is of interest to administrators of UUCP-capable multi-user systems without a direct connection to the Internet (such as dialup computer bulletin boards and small company offices) who would like to make internet email and usenet newsgroups available to their users. This service includes:
Due to significantly reduced demand, RXN no longer offers Gated RXN UUCP Service. This service provided internet email and usenet newsgroups translated, or gated , into Fidonet Technology Network (FTN) netmail and echomail . This service was of interest to dialup computer bulletin board system operators running FTN software who were interested in bringing internet email and usenet newsgroups to their BBS without the need for additional gating software. If you have an interest in this type of service, please contact support@rxn.com. We will be happy to help you setup gating software at your site, and then configure you for the full RXN UUCP Service. $Id: 9,v 1.2 2004/03/28 05:06:28 rjd Exp $ |
